The morning passed quickly, the afternoon even faster. Muddy Waters residents are no longer restricted to their homes. The town that looked abandoned the first time I entered it thrived now with people. The sidewalks cleared by noon. Stores that had been closed for days opened. Though the streets seemed alive once more, it was the grill that seemed the place to be.
Not a single table was empty. The fireplace brought to life; the scent of fried food rolled from the kitchen. The bar packed as the drinks flowed. Anna ran the kitchen and while I wanted to help her, I had proven to be more in the way than an aide. Instead, I ran food and took orders, a job I had once while in college.
âYouâre new to town.â A sweet voice behind me as I placed an order down. I turned; my smile grew as I saw a middle-aged African American woman in what could only be described as designer clothing in that town.
âI guess you can say that,â I replied.
âStrange time to move to a new town. Especially this town.â She pushed out the chair next to her with a nod for me to sit. âMy name is Bella. I run the local salon.â It didnât surprise me this woman ran a salon. She had this beauty about her, a natural glow. She had long black hair, thick. Her eyes were a hazel hue that seemed almost fake.
âNice to meet you,â I replied as I sat. âMy name is Natasha.â
âNice to meet you as well. Tell me, when did you get to town?â I chuckled at the question and cleared my throat as I looked at her.
âJust a couple of days. I kinda arrived here by mistake. Got turned around in the storm.â The woman took a drink from her cup with a sideways grin.
âThatâs easy to do, how most people come to find this small slice of heaven we have here.â I grinned with a slight nod. âCourse, most people head for the hills once the snow melts. Donât recall ever seeing one get a job.â She paused; her gaze locked on me as though she worked to size me up. âTell me, are you staying at the inn?â I blushed at her question.
âIâve been staying at the Quinn farm.â Bella laughed with my answer, her brows raised as she took another quick drink from her tea.
âThat explains it.â She lifted her cup to her lips with a small sip. Bella didnât act as though someone who would live in such a small town, a big city is the read I got from her.
âI take it youâve met our Mr. Rowland Quinn, then?â She continued with a lowering of the glass. Could this be my chance to get information about him? Should I pry into the manâs life more than I had?
âHeâs the one who saved me after my car died on the side of the road.â She sat in silence; her stare locked on me as though she could read my mind.
